As the months slip by and MGMT’s US tour dates fill up, they seem to have forgotten to do one small job – announcing the release date for their third album. While everyone is hoping for the next ‘Kids’, the band insist that they will be following the track of their second(flop) album Congratulations. Time to play the waiting game, to see exactly how hipster these guys have gone…apparently there will be a cover of Faine Jade’s ‘Introspection’ on the new album.

While we’re waiting, take a look at their latest single ‘Alien Days’. Is MGMT’s style move away from mainstream going to deem them gone forever? Let us know what you think in the comments…

mad respect for these guys for making the kind of music they want to make and not giving into the pop pressure because of a few singles from their first album.

I’m pretty excited about this new album. Congratulations was one of my favorite albums of 2010, so I am hoping this album is just as good or even better. Does anybody know the release date of it?

Whoever says MGMT is not original was dropped on their head. If you think they lack originality, tell me, what songs have they stolen ideas. Also, MGMT is just about 20x better than Animal Collective, so for those of you that listen to them, your opinion is irrelevant to my own head.

Love it! I don’t care what any critics will say about it. They were wrong about congratulations and they will probably be wrong about this album too. This is brilliant. reminds me of Syd Barrett when that guitar and drums come in

MGMT doesn’t strive to make accessible pop music for mindless sheep like you. They do what they want and try to create things that haven’t been done before. Fuck accessibility, and fuck you. Close-minded zombie.

It’s plenty accessible for me. And yes, in the sense that they’re both psych rock, Pink Floyd “already did this”, but Rembrandt didn’t stop painting because Michelangelo “already did” that. Or since I already like oranges, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t acquire a taste for grapefruit, just because I’ve already got the citrus thing covered. It’s psychedelic rock. It has been done, it is being done, and I hope it continues to be done forever. It’s a wonderful genre of music.

Look at these goon MGMT fans. I say that they aren’t very original and I get pelted with thumbs down. People need to stop taking themselves so seriously. You can’t deny that Congratulations was highly influence by old psychedelic bands unless you are so pretentious that you block out anything that possibly implies that a band you like isn’t the greatest band ever. I said already that I’m an MGMT fan, I’m just being real here.

i don’t think anybody’s denying that mgmt takes HUGE influence from a LOT of bands. that is why i like them. but i disagree with you saying they aren’t original. what, i disagree with YOUR opinion and that makes ME a “goon”? i’ve been listening to this band for two months. i’m not obsessed with them. but i think they have a fairly unique brand of pop.
i know better than most that truly unique music doesn’t exist. but i still challenge you to find a chord progession that is similar to alien days

Well, there is much more unique music out there, I know that for a fact, even if there is no such thing as truly unique music. That’s not the point of course.
I’ll take your challenge, but are you referring to keyboards, guitars or what? Altogether, because this songs structure is honestly very similar to some other psychedelic songs I’ve heard. I don’t see why this is pissing people off so much! I love MGMT but they just have very visible influences! Is that wrong for me to say?

i didn’t like kids when it came out. i am no idiot.
kids may have gotten them big (they released around four versions of it—i prefer the ttp EP version) but everything that comes after it is what will keep them at their height. it takes more than one “big” song for a band to make a lasting impact.
i’m just tired of people that like kids the most saying alien days is their worst song, when obviously their earliest songs (especially kids) were jokes, not actual songs they cared about.

sure no band is wholly original but i’d like to see you find any song ever that has a similar chord progression to alien days

He’s just a wannabe hipster. All MGMT songs are great, if it’s not the beat, it’s the lyrics. If it’s not the lyrics, it’s the beat.
